Home Sweet Home - Global Game Jam 2019

๐Ÿƒ Card game Overview:

"Home Sweet Home" is a card game realized within the frame of the Global Game Jam 2019 in Mar del Plata city hosted in Globant.

"It's a funny filler with draft , where everything could change at the very last instant of the game"

Our characters moved to a new flat. But they need certain objects to make this space feel like home.

All the characters have different professions, personalities and tastes.

Varieties and personality combinations such as:

The dealer + grandmother "Olga White"
The Musician + Programmer "DJ Angular"

Components

  • 3 to 8 players
  • 15-20 min
  • 71 object cards
  • 24 profile cards
  • Rule Book

Design process:

Our team was integrated by designers and developers from different areas.

Matias Cueva (FrontEnd Developer), Elisa Goyeneche (UX Designer), Patricio Mariano (Industrial Designer), Gonzalo Messina (Developer), Matias Raimondo (Graphic Designer) and Leandro Tami (Developer).

This interdisciplinary team had participated in the short time lapse of the event.

- Conceptualize the idea trough a Brainstorming technique.

- Work in the story telling.

- Create meaningful and funny characters with biography and profile .

- Build low fidelity card prototypes.

- Design the card's layout and components .

- Play test the low fidelity prototype to polish ideas and mechanics.

- Test with users .

- Rebuild post user's feedback .

- Level out the cards and components .

- Layout the files to print .

- Play test the mid fidelity Print and Play version.

- Again test with users, get feedback, polish and iterate.

- Retouch the files and game rules.

Global Game Jam 2019

The event consisted in the realization of a game (physical or digital) in just 48 hours, with certain instructions given.
The Keyword was the word "Home".
This concept would be used later on as a story frame that would lead the apparition of game mechanics, components, and different game typologies.

Mix and match ideas

We defined personalities and professions for our characters, and then we used a chart to mix them.

The result of this technique was a very funny mixture of unthinkable and ridiculous personalities that would lead later on to build a story around them.

Playtest aids

To build the first prototypes we used regular playing cards inside a plastic card foil as a base, and then we used a paper with a text of what we wanted to represent placed on top of the card.
This technique gave us the possibility to quickly test our paper prototype in order to measure the card quantity and components.

Sketching and BIO

After we defined and mixed the personalities, we sort and divided some of the characters profile among our group and then each one wrote a background story for the characters accordingly to their profile. Afterwards we sketched the characters. In the picture we can see a sketch from one of our programmers, Matรญas Cueva.

Filtering and Card sorting

After the first testing with paper prototypes, we discovered that there were many extra or unused cards..
So we layout every single card in a table and started to match, delete or merge many of those extra cards using the Card Sorting technique.

Mid fidelity prototype

Once we printed the Profile Cards, we used a card and a plastic card foil as a base.  In this step we wanted to test playability and components, but to do so we needed the ability to shuffle and deal the cards.

Test with users

The key piece of this project. We could validate our ideas and game components, and this phase was by far what we had enjoyed the most and had tons of laughs!  By receiving feedback from the testers and write everything down to iterate the prototyping phase and re test.

Mock up

To finalize the event, we prepared some card mockups, refined the rules and uploaded the entire project over the Global Game Jam platform, so every Jammer could access to the project and play our game as well!
Our extra mile was the addition of 15 Chaos cards as an DLC pack.
